Dachshund’s Common Diseases
In reality, there is no disease truly common in Dachshunds Most Dachshunds are born healthy and live long, relatively disease-free lives.Almost every dog can develop minor health issues even if they receive vaccinations and excellent life-long care. Even dogs that receive their vaccinations and excellent life-long care can develop some minor health issues in their lifetime.
Nevertheless, some conditions do occur more often in Dachshund than in other breeds.
Adrenal Gland Malfunction
Hyperadrenocorticism, or Cushing’s Disease, is one common disease of the adrenal gland. In Cushing’s Disease, too much of the cortisol hormone is produced, either by the adrenal gland or a primary tumor, or a malfunction of the pituitary gland, which is the master gland that tells the adrenal gland how much cortisol to produce. The elevated cortisol level results in skin conditions, excessive drinking and urination, a pot-bellied appearance, hair loss and sometimes diabetes. Special lab tests are conducted to measure cortisol and the adrenal glands capability to produce cortisol. Cortisol levels can be decreased by several different drugs. Occasionally, surgery may be needed to remove the adrenal gland if it is cancerous. Cushing’s disease is not limited to Dachshunds and can be found in other breeds, too.
The opposite condition is called Addison’s disease or hypoadrenocorticsim (low cortisol). Cushing’s takes some time to present itself, but Addison’s disease is a sudden episode of collapse due to an imbalance of the electrolytes and too low of glucose (blood sugar). The sudden illness results in an emergency visit to the veterinarian to correct the imbalances with cortisone injections and fluid therapy. With the sudden collapse resembling many disorders, Addison’s is the most difficult disease to diagnose. Specialized blood tests are necessary to identify both Cushing’s and Addison’s Disease. Life long treatment with prednisone and electrolyte supplements will be needed to treat Addison’s disease.
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Several eye diseases can affect Dachshunds, such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. PRA is a gradual deterioration of the retina, the back wall of the eye. This results in slow vision loss and eventual blindness. PRA is a genetic trait, and since it is a slow, progressive disease, these dogs are sometimes bred before the disease is diagnosed, thus perpetuating the disease. Unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment for PRA. Other eye diseases that can affect Doxies are cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve hypoplasia, abnormal eyelashes (distichiasis) as well as other conditions. Regular eye exams can help early detection of these eye-disorders.
Intervertebral Disc Disease
By far the most common disease of Dachshunds is related to the discs between the vertebrae (the bones of the spine). The disc provides a cushion between the bones of the back (spine) and is normally gelatinous. In Doxies, this material sometimes hardens, or calcifies, and sometimes ruptures. The herniated disc causes inflammation and swelling around the spinal cord and nerves. The herniated disc causes pain, a reluctance to jump up, partial paralysis and can progress to total paralysis. Most of them with disc disease can be managed medically with pain medication and anti-inflammatory medications. Some owners have tried holistic medicine, such as acupuncture or chiropractic manipulation to help with the pain. If there is a complete rupture resulting in total paralysis, immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord may help restore full function in the legs. The faster the surgery is performed, the greater the chances of full recovery.
Experimental treatment is being tested that uses laser heat to fuse the disc material in the spine to prevent the rupture. Because this is such a common problem in the Doxie, I do recommend purchasing health insurance for your pet. Spinal surgery for herniated discs is very expensive and I have had the uneasy task of performing euthanasia on several Dachshunds because the owner’s were unable to pay for the surgery. Over time, a few of my patients there were partially paralyzed did recover some function of their legs. Some dogs may recover without surgery, but it is impossible to predict.
Vaccination Reactions
Allergic reactions to vaccinations does seem to occur in the Dachshund more often than any other breed. Usually, the reaction is minor, resuling in swelling of the muzzle and face and sometimes hives. Occasional vaccine reactions can occur with any dog so it is always a good idea to observe your pet for a few hours after their shots. Vaccines have improved over the past few years so reactions are fewer and the benefits of protecting your pet against the diseases outweighs the risks.

The biggest secret to dog training is understanding the method of positive conditioning. All that’s really necessary after that is a lot of patience and being very consistent. Most behavior problems in dogs come from not understanding reinforcement or from not using it consistently.
To utilise it consistently, you’ll find that you need an abundance of patience. You need to understand the amount of time needed to train a dog. You must also understand that you need to be consistent every time you are with your dog, not just during training sessions. This means that you also need your family members and anyone who interacts with your dog to be consistent also.
Positive conditioning means that a positive reinforcement i.e. pleasing stimulus when your dog performs some behavior will encourage him to perform that particular action again. It’s unfortunate that a lot of owners positively reinforce unwanted behaviors in their dogs. For example, they give affection to their dog as it jumps up on them when they enter the house. They are positively reinforcing their dog to jump up on people without realising it.
If you ever watch the Dog Whisperer on TV, you will see that even though the families have watched his program, maybe even read his books and know intellectually what they should do, they still reward all sorts of unwanted behavior without realising it. The Dog Whisperer is very different which is why the dogs behave differently with him. He is always consistent and ignores the dog if it’s doing unwanted behaviors. In nearly all cases that he helps, the problems are with the owner and his inconsistency.
It requires a lot of self-discipline and awareness to restrain from giving your dog affection when he is doing an unwanted behavior. Any attention is better than no attention to a dog. This means that, unfortunately, shouting at your dog may positively reinforce the behavior even though your intention is the opposite of that. So, the best response to unwanted behaviors in your dog may be to ignore them by turning away from your dog and giving no attention.
It’s more effective to focus on reinforcing positive behaviors rather than focusing on using negative reinforcement for unwanted behaviors. As the dog is encouraged more and more in positive behaviors, less time will be given by him to negative behaviors which go unrewarded.
Obviously, you may have to stop your dog doing unwanted behaviors For example, if he jumps on the food counter, you can just pull him off.
How do you reinforce behaviors you want to encourage? You reward the behavior by giving a tasty treat or by giving affection. Using small tasty treats is probably the most efficient method. The treat needs to be given as close in time to the behavior as possible. This is where using clicker training makes this process easier. The clicker sound is used to mark the behavior precisely as it happens and the treat comes immediately afterwards. A puppy doesn’t have a terribly reliable early warning system for the first several weeks, so make sure to sort this out as soon as you can for both your sake. As soon as you can, pick out a spot near the puppy’s bed, food or play area. You will find it rewarding to predict when it’s time to take your puppy to go out. Generally, puppies are required to go as soon as they wake up, after drinking or eating, when they are excited, after playing, or at least once every waking hour!
You must also learn to read your puppy’s body language and soon you’d realize the tell tale signs that tell you he needs to use the bathroom. When a puppy is persistently sniffing, circling a single spot or has his tail held high, those are common signals. When this happens, all you have to do is get your pup and bring him or her to the appointed toilet area. Taking these steps will ensure that puppy house training is successful.
Even dogs that have gone through dog training classes will occasionally have small accidents when they are very excited or when greeting friends and family members. This is an instinctive reaction known as submissive urination and shouldn’t be handled apart from house training. Although there may be additional accidents, your dog must not be chastised. They will only be confused by punishment, and become secretive about going to the bathroom.
Do not yell at your dog, instead work things out until this habit is broken this when accidents like this happen during periods of high excitement. Keep greetings low key and preferably do them while you’re both still outside. Greet your dog gently in order to build up its confidence. If your puppy has an accident, it’s best to just clean it up without making a big deal of it. Soon your dog will no longer be having these accidents and you’ll be congratulating yourself for having successfully completed another round of puppy house training.
